Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements made by skipper Ben Stokes regarding the team environment not being "weak men".

The all-rounder made those words in several conversations in the wake of his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series versus Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat with a match to spare, the captain noted he had let his message to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

However, following the opener made 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently took a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before this match, Stokes said his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley stated the messaging from the captain and coach McCullum had remained in line with their prior tenure in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we could do something special going into this Test."

Australia Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket late on Saturday came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England 207-6 chasing a notional target of 435.

This means, the home team require four wickets on the final day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

Defeat will extend the English team's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes series loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in just 11 days of play – with England losing the initial matches in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," said Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be hard coming here to face them. They were the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place In Question

Although the opener's performance in the third Test probably answers doubts about his immediate future in the England team, Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in the team's second innings on Saturday, extending his poor record against the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

However, Crawley insisted any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is noise from the outside. There's no discussion of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he finished.
