A minimum of 13 individuals perish and 98 injured in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” stated the country's president.

The official reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's economic goals for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The building of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid pace, surpassing predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked persistent apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party urged an immediate suspension in the development and management of all such projects.

This pause was suggested pending a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "requires immediate answers."

In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in complete compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and running of these vital undertakings.
